Southwest Pennsylvania’s interfaith community will gather for a vigil on Wednesday evening, April 24 at 6 p.m. at Heinz Chapel at Fifth & Bellefield Avenues in Oakland responding to Sunday’s bombings in Sri Lanka, which killed nearly 300 people, many of whom were in the midst of Easter worship. The community will gather to honor those who died and in support of their families and all who mourn them.
The event is free and open to the community.
Sponsoring organizations include the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center, Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania, Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network, Muslim Association of Greater Pittsburgh, JCC Pittsburgh’s Center for Loving Kindness, Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, Temple Sinai, All for All, Repair the World Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Area Pax Christi, AHINSA, CAIR Pittsburgh Chapter, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden.
The vigil will include prayers for peace and interfaith understanding from a variety of religious leaders, aiming to provide consolation to Pittsburgh’s Sri Lankan community and to reiterate our region’s commitment to interfaith harmony and peace. An offering at the service will be sent to Sri Lanka to assist survivors and rebuild the damaged churches.
