Trinity in Pittsburgh was not the only parish with African American members.When Assistant Bishop Henry Onderdonk made one of his periodic visits to the western part of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, he baptized James Carter at Blairsville in March 1835 and then confirmed him in May of the same year.
