As blacks moved into the older middle class housing in Homewood, whites left for Penn Hills.  St. James Parish wanted to follow its members. Once again, the diocese urged the African American parish to buy a building vacated by a white parish moving to the suburbs, rather than build on their own. Bishop Pardue’s 1954 Convention Address spelled out the details.
