In 1966, with the Civil Rights Movement in full swing, Bishop Pardue politely reminded a member of the diocese that the Church had taken a stand for open housing, and he was not going to tell a black priest he couldn’t live somewhere. The priest was Junius Carter, the new rector of Holy Cross.
