A Reflection on Recent Events from Bishop Ketlen

Dear Members of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh,

Corey Comperatore, a beloved firefighter from Armstrong County who was killed during the assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump, has been laid to rest today, Thursday, July 18, 2024. My heart and prayers go to Mr. Comperatore’s family and friends, and to all who were injured during the shooting. I am also saddened for the family of the young man who carried out such an act of deplorable violence, losing his own life in the process.

In a statement about the shooting, our Presiding Bishop, Michael B. Curry, called our attention to the priority of love with these words, “The way of love—not the way of violence—is the way we bind up our nation’s wounds. We decry political violence in any form, and our call as followers of Jesus of Nazareth is always to love.”

I pray for the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, to keep our hearts and minds deeply rooted in the knowledge and love of God and of Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of Peace.

In Christ,
