Diocesan Transitions July 2023

New Calls

The Rev. Marjorie Bevans has accepted the call to be the next Rector at St. Michael’s of the Valley in Ligonier, starting on August 1. She most recently served as the Rector at Church of the Good Shepherd in Parkersburg, WV.

The Rev. Deacon Cynthia Gainer, who was ordained to the Vocational Diaconate on Saturday, June 3, has been assigned by Bishop Ketlen to serve as the regular supply clergy at St. Bartholomew’s in Scottdale, as well as serving regularly at Church of the Advent, Jeannette, and All Souls, North Versailles.

The Rev. Deacon Jim Miorelli, a new Transitional Deacon, has been assigned as Pastor-in-Charge at St. Thomas, Canonsburg, starting on August 1.

Deaths

The Rev. Mary Weatherwax died Friday afternoon, July 7, in hospice care at her home in Friendship Village in Upper St. Clair. Mary+ was a former Assistant Rector at St. Paul’s, Mt. Lebanon, and previously served at Episcopal parishes in Salem and Bridgeport, WV. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s on Friday, August 4, at 11 a.m.

The Reverend Marjorie McCarty died on Tuesday, July 11. She served at parishes in Havelock, NC and Gloucester, VA, prior to her retirement to the Pittsburgh area in 2008. She was a member of Christ Church, North Hills. A Memorial Service was held at Christ Church on July 15.

Completed Calls

The Rev. Canon Natalie Hall has ended her ministry as Canon for Evangelism & Faith Formation. Natalie+ will continue to serve as the full-time Rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Squirrel Hill.

Retirement

The Rev. Canon Dr. Cathy Brall is retiring from St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Canonsburg. Her final service will be on Sunday, July 30. Canon Cathy+ is also retiring from her diocesan role as Coordinator for the Episcopal/Anglican Concentration and House of Study at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Appointments

Bruce Quayle of Christ Church, North Hills, has been appointed as the representative from District 1 to Diocesan Council, filling a vacancy that expires at the end of 2023.

Louise Mead of St. Mark’s, Johnstown, has been appointed as the representative from District 4 to Diocesan Council, filling a vacancy that expires at the end of 2024.

On May 31, the Rev. Deacon Linda Tardy Wilson was appointed to a three-year term on the Commission on Ministry.

Changes to Diocesan Staff

Andrea Rath has been hired as the Executive Assistant to support the Bishop, Bishop’s Office, and diocesan committees. Andrea comes to the staff with valuable prior experience and is a member of St. Paul’s, Mt. Lebanon. Andrea starts the job on August 1. As Andrea is trained in her role, Andy Muhl will shed the Executive Assistant duties that he has held since 2019 and assume the role of Director of Communication & Technology.
