Why should I attend an Anti-Racism Workshop?
All are encouraged to attend. If you are in a position of leadership (lay or clergy), these workshops fulfill the Episcopal Church's requirement for all persons appointed or elected to positions of leadership on committees, commissions, agencies and boards within a diocese.
What can I expect at an Anti-Racism Workshop?
Workshops are designed to raise the consciousness of all participants through well-planned activities, discussion, videos and materials from the latest edition of Seeing the Face of God in Each Other and may be slightly altered to meet the specific needs of groups. Friday workshops begin at approximately 3 pm and conclude with a Compline service scheduled for 8:20 pm. A Friday night dinner is provided. Saturday workshops begin at approximately 8:30 am and conclude with a Holy Eucharist service scheduled at 4:30 pm. A continental breakfast and lunch are provided on Saturday. Workshops may also be scheduled to run on two consecutive Saturdays. Either way, participants must attend both days of the workshop. All meals and materials are provided at no charge. A free will donation for food is gratefully received.
What will I take away from a workshop?
What you take away depends upon the extent to which you are open to new ideas about yourself and others who may look different from you. You will take away a plan for your parish or committee to counteract the insidious “privileges” and “power plays” that continue to marginalize folks because of race and or social standing.
Where and when are the workshops held?
The Commission on Race and Reconciliation of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh schedules two Anti-Racism Workshops a year at various locations around the diocese.
